Title: 230SL data card decoding
Post by: w113bkk on January 29, 2015, 23:50:32
Hello all,
I just purchased a 230SL and am learning quickly about the car. Prior to this car I enjoyed driving a 190e 16v for 14 years. I received a copy of the data card and was trying to decode the information listed. I've been using the info provided on the forum and interpited the card from left to right as follows:
production shift: 3028

prod #: 0031
body # 00581

the car was ordered in 1965
country code: 706
upper and lower body color: 190 (graphite gray)
interior color: 117 (red 2500 seats, red 6509 carpet)
box 41 with 6 marked I believe means hard top included

Looking at the attached photos can you help determine the following:
Is the country code 706? When I called my local dealership to inquire about parts they said that when they checked the vin it shows the car originally came with Euro headlight lenses.
What does shift 3028 indicate?
Is there a way I can tell the date the car was produced?
What does 720 indicate (it's stamped in the box under the body color box)
What do boxes 49, 50, 52, 64 and 66 indicate?

Thanks for the insight!

You have shown a photo of your VIN identification plate that is attached to the car and your paint plate also attached to the car but no Data Card that Mercedes would have sent to you.  Do you have that as that is where you can read all the codes correctly from

Country code 706 is USA
The 720 soft top colour - Black
The 49, 50, 52, 64 are option code first two digits, the box will have the third digit e.g. 49 and 3 493 USA version with heavy duty heat exchanger
508 LH Mirror
524 Paint coat preservation
641 White wall tyres
669 A shipping protection mode

Hi,
to decode your data card see here: www.sl113.org/wiki/DataCard/DataCards.
You should blacken your key codes on your card (14, 16) when you show it to the public.
