Title: Engine die when idling warm
Post by: bkksl on January 20, 2015, 02:38:33
I have a early 1968 280SL Manual trans and I seek advice our forums to the issue I encounter. The problem occur when the engine is warm and running low rpm or idle, rpm swing and it dies like its running too rich. The hotter the more obvious. I can hear the injector pump running sounds like when you are starting the car.

I have not had the injector pump or nozzle checked yet.
Question
1)   Could you advise what could be the probable cause?
2)   Which part of fuel system I should have it checked?
3)   How often do you need to have the injector nozzle calibrated?
Thanks

Hello Bkksl,

What is your engine rpm when the engine is cold?  I think your telling us that your engine stalls when it is hot and you still hear the "electric fuel pump running"? If so you may just need a simple adjustment of your idle. Have you driven this car? How does it run when you drive it?  What is the history of the problem?  The more information you give us, the more we can help.

Hi ja17

Thanks for your reply, I recently purchased the car this is the first time I've driven it more than 30 mins,  I have quite a limited info.  The idle rpm after start was around 1100 rpm  but when warm it swing between 1500-2000 ( it was difficult to read because the tachometer keep swinging up/down I guess the cable need lubrication).  The engine run fine at higher speed but having trouble keeping engine running at idle and low rpm like 1200.   Let me know if I can provide anymore info.

Things I would check:

- dwell/point gap (40 degrees, 0.012") and timing (8 degrees BTDC cranking on starter)
- linkage adjustment (see "Linkage Tour" thread)
- check warm-running device for proper operation (do a Search).  I think it may be stuck in a partially open position.

Cheers,

CT

I agree with Chuck's advice and would add a fresh set of NGK spark plugs and an engine  compression check before you begin.
