Title: Indicator lever not holding as an indicator of mileage?
Post by: GGR on December 01, 2014, 15:04:09
Like many other Mercedes of the era, my indicator lever has started not holding its upper position. This is due to a cavity wearing inside the mechanism and can be addressed by reshaping it. I am however wondering at what mileage this starts occurring, to help me cross-check what I think is the car's original mileage of now 80.000 miles. I realize it may vary a lot depending if the car is used mainly in town or on highways. But like the brake pedal and driver's seat wear, it could be used as a rough indicator of mileage, and help us identify if what the odometer is showing is accurate or if the car has gone through a 100.000 miles revolution already. What is Group Member's experience in this regard?

One point for your analysis - My 280 SL has this same issue, but every now and again or if I use it gingerly it will stay in place at the upper position. The car has 140K on it, and I have the documentation to verify that.

Mine started at 83,000. I replaced it with new.

I give up. Mine doesn't hold the bottom position. 1966 230SL with 76,800 documented miles. And I would venture to guest that most of those miles were in city driving.

Can anyone give me a fix for not holding the bottom position? Sure would be better than replacing the entire turn signal switch.

TIA

If your car is European spec the miles are usually the miles since the speedometer was swapped from a kilometer per hour to a mile per hour unit.

I did this repair some time ago, unfortunately I cannot remember too much.
There was a web site that described the process, it was in German I think but
the pictures were helpful. The main thing is when you discover where to file
off some metal do not remove too much otherwise it will be difficult to operate the lever.

Here is a photo of my lever mechanism.
The two rollers to the right of the photo are
what holds the lever in position if I remember correctly,
the wear has caused the central indentation to be too shallow
so must be carefully enlarged.
The trick is getting to it, bit fiddly etc.
