Title: Motor Oil
Post by: jcochran@cox.net on October 17, 2014, 01:03:10
Hi,
Does anyone have knowledge/opinions of using  Penrite Classic Light oil or Castrol Classic vs. something like a Shell Rotella? It is apparently a very subjective topic but I'd like to get the best protection I can for my restored vehicle.

Thanks,
Jim

Jim,

There are probably more comments on the different types of oil that can/should/could be used than any other subject.  Everyone appears to have their favourites and a search of the Forum will bring up hundreds of posts on the subject ad-nauseam.

Garry,
If there is no sound engineering/scientific data then please remove my post - I'm disappointed to hear that.

Thanks,
Jim Cochran

Jim,
was your engine rebuilt? If so then use whatever the shop recommends to use to keep up the warranty.
Metric Motors recommends Castrol for their rebuilt engines : http://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=15611.msg107260#msg107260

My mechanic here recommended Shell Rotella T, 15-40 as it has a high zinc level. Apparently his concern is the flattening of the cam lobes with reduced zinc content in newer oil formulations.
I found it at O'Reilly's Auto Parts in a bulk container.
