Title: Unique drone video of the European Event 2014
Post by: Peter van Es on October 07, 2014, 16:58:22
Pieter Vandaele produced some unique photographs and footage of the gathering of 31 Pagoda's on the Brooklands Banking Circuit, during the European Event 2014. He used a quadcopter drone with a camera underneath to show our cars from a unique angle. I used some additional photographs, added some music, to make a little, 4 minute video of the event. Lots of people in period dress for Goodwood.

Have a look at the home page of the site at http://www.sl113.org (http://www.sl113.org) for the video, and let us know here what you think of it. Thanks to Pieter and the other photographers…

Peter

Peter, do you mind sharing which model of drone you have?

I have been thinking of getting one for my business but waiting for them to develop a bit more really..

It was not my drone, but of Bart Vandaele's son Pieter. I believe the model he used is one of these: http://www.dji.com/product/phantom-2-vision

Fantastic! I loooove the quad camera footage and the way Peter has put the movie together.  Well done.  I actually watched the video in hospital on my mobile phone.  Kept me busy and my mind off other nasty things.

I have always loved digital photography and got my first digital camera all the way back in the 90's.  Amazing how far technology has come is 15 years.  Would dearly love one of the quad copters and with all the time I have had in bed over the last couple of week have also been watching dozens of you tube videos and reading quite a few commentaries on various rc and photography forums about various units.  Seems that under 1500 US the best by far is the DJI Phantom 2.  Unbelievable piece of kit if you start looking into what its capable off.  Take a look at this two minute you tube vid.  Make sure you turn the quality right up to 1080p to see the amazing quality of actual footage out of this unit.

I am interested to know what type of copter Peter used to get his footage.

Perhaps I might use some of the sale of my W108 and put it toward a new toy :)

Peter I am wondering if at some stage we are ever thinking of updating the forum software to allow storage of video content.  Over time with the sort of toys we are talking about here it would be great to add this functionality to cater for this type of content or imbedding of inline youtube iframes.

Andy,

as I wrote in one of the earlier replies… the drone is owned by the son of one of the members in attendance. I believe it was this model: http://www.dji.com/product/phantom-2-vision

The video that you see on the home page is indeed hosted on our own web server and streamed from there. The forum software we use does not allow embedding of video. The software is no longer standard, it has been heavily modified to support our membership system, and many, many security and anti-spam measures. Others have also asked for more friendly, Flickr like photo uploading, but that is not going to happen either.

However, I also have a personal dislike of forums with embedded video. I find it messy and I don't mind clicking a link.

I've looked into upgrading the forum software, or indeed moving to a new platform. The last time we did an upgrade, I was able to move the entire message base, including attachments, intact into the new software. With all the newer, more modern packages, this does not appear to be an option. So we'd have to leave the old forum content here, and take all the discussions to a new platform. Not an ideal solution, I'm sure you agree.

So I'm sticking with the old adage: "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". I will move the platform to a new, bigger server over the next few weeks, as we are running out of space on the current one. We currently have some 38GB of content and we'll hit a brick wall at 40GB. Because the virtual server package is no longer used, I must move all to a new physical server, still with the same hoster.

The software on this forum works exceedingly well, no doubt in large part to these hidden things that Peter has implemented.
Rather than try to move this or otherwise monkey around with it, wouldn't it be easier to have a "Pagoda SL Group" YouTube channel?
Videos by members can be uploaded there, and a sticky link to the channel can be put on our members page or something like that.

Caveat: if you load a video up to YouTube, they have sophisticated servers that will listen to the audio, and if they detect even snippets of copyrighted music, they advise. In some cases, it's just a warning; in other cases, the video or audio will not be able to be viewed in certain countries, and in the worst case, will be removed. For those interested there's been a lot written on it and a lot of testing that people have done to try and fool their "listening" servers. Just do a search.
