Title: Number of Pagoda's Registered
Post by: Rolf-Dieter ✝︎ on September 12, 2014, 17:26:02
Last July one of the members of the German Pagoda Club issued the document (See PDF File below or Screen Shot attached) showing the number of Pagoda's registered in Germany. The interesting point the document shows is that over time the number of Pagoda's increases as time goes by.

One of the members pointed out that the increase is due to more and more Pagoda's being returned from the USA to Germany and then made road worthy. Another Member pointed out that Pagoda's with Key Numbers 000 are not included in this data sheet (meaning that the count may not or is not accurate).

Question; Is it known how many Pagoda's are registered in the USA and Canada? Does anyone of you have that information or came across it?

If what is said on the German Forum (Pagoda's moving back from the USA to Germany) then our numbers must be declining? What do you fellows think?

Translation;

Typ-Schl.Nr. = TYPICAL KEY NUMBER

Bestand an Pagoden zum: = NUMBER OF PAGODA'S AS OF DATE

Gesamt - TOTAL

4,300 registered Pagodas in Germany? Hmm. I need to revisit the spreadsheet I did 10+ years ago to estimate the number of surviving Pagodas around the world. I thought 35,000 then based kn a couple of SWAG assumptions, one of them related to country populations. If a country like Germany with maybe 70 million inhabitants has 4,300 Pagodas then we can extrapolate based on the number of people who live in the other countries...

To add to this: I wonder if it would be possible to get, from Mercedes, the number of Pagodas sold in each country around the world. Then, knowing the number now present in Germany, you could presume similar proportions in other countries.  For example, if there were 16000 originally sold in Germany, and there are now around 4000 there, you could say that the same proportion (25%) remains worldwide of the original total, which I think was around 50000. While this would be somewhat off due to cars crossing the Atlantic, it might not be a bad estimate. I think in the 1980s, they were crossing in the other direction (mine is one of those).

Amazing how these old questions resurface again after a few years.  ;)
The number of cars exported is known but it is not broken down into which countries - with one exception: USA numbers are known:

I think that an estimate by country and its population may lead to wrong conclusions as in this case the highest number of Pagodas should be in... China.

I also wonder whether the so called tourist, diplomatic and other export sales concluded in Germany are counted as German sales or export.

Lastly, regarding my country, I would assume that most if not all Pagodas found their way to Poland after the communist era ended i.e. after 1989. We estimate the total number of "resident cars" at about 120-150. And most of them come indeed from the USA.
There is also a certain number of cars imported to Poland then renovated and sold often to Germany.
