Title: engine starting problem
Post by: jtranter on August 10, 2014, 15:33:24
When I first start my 280SL, everything works fine.  However, after I driven the car for a good while and turn it off, it will not restart.  If I wait a while and it cools down, it starts.  My mechanic replaced the starter, but the problem continues.  When I try to start the car after it has run in a while, I usually get a clicking sound; sometimes not.   Any suggestions, before I take it back to my mechanic?

My starter list, with problem areas in CAPS.

1. If it's an automatic, try starting in N, plus have someone move the shifter while you try to start.  BAD NEUTRAL SWITCH
2. Check the battery ground at the frame and battery ends. BAD GROUND
3. Check the ground strap that runs from the bell housing to the firewall BAD GROUND
4. Check to see if you are getting current to Terminal 50 (small wire on the starter).  WORN IGNITION SWITCH
5. See how much voltage /resistance you have at the big lug on the starter.  CORROSION IN MAIN WIRE FROM BATTERY TO STARTER

Good luck,

CT

Are you saying that the engine does not want to turn?
