Title: Air Conditioning Installation
Post by: Tomnistuff on August 08, 2014, 22:40:04
Here's is a question I don't even know where to post.  A/C related postings are in almost every category.

On an air conditioned 230SL, with the circular (flying saucer shaped) expansion tank, where do the two A/C hoses penetrate the firewall?  I've seen lots of photos of 280SL systems with the "torpedo" shaped expansion tank but no photos of that area of 230SLs with A/C.

My engine is still out of the car and the firewall is exposed, ready for me to locate two holes for the A/C hoses but there are so many things that go back in the engine compartment, I want to make sure I put the holes where they won't interfere with other stuff on either side of the firewall when I route the hoses.

Does anyone have photos of the hose penetration of the firewall on an air conditioned 230SL with the big circular expansion tank?

Any help will be appreciated.

Hi, Tom.

Here's a photo of the engine compartment on my 1965 230 SL from two years ago.  Since then, I've had the A/C compressor replaced along with the blower, expansion valve and receiver.  Also did the R-12 conversion to R-134a.  All now working well.

Hope this helps,

Rich

Thank you very much, Rich.  With your excellent photo, I can probably locate that hose within about a quarter inch.  Can you identify where the other hose penetrates the firewall, the one without the dryer?  A photo isn't necessary if you can give me approximate distances, like, Y inches below and X inches left or right of the dryer fitting hole, as seen from the engine compartment.  I suspect that it cannot even be seen from inside the car because of the evaporator, fan(s) and ducting.

Thanks,

Hi, Tom.

Unfortunately, I don't have access to the car right now.  It's in the shop getting the rear axle seals and rear suspension bushings replaced.  Wish I could help further.

Good luck!!
