Title: What is the value in a stripped hardtop?
Post by: scoot on July 21, 2014, 20:33:13
I had the opportunity over the weekend to buy a bunch of parts from an upholstery warehouse that had closed sometime back.  Amongst the items in the shop were about 5 R107 hardtops and 3 R113 hardtops.   One complete, one mostly complete, and one completely stripped.  I bought them all needless to say because it seemed like I should.  Perhaps I'm crazy.  Anyway, does a stripped hardtop have value?  It's not banged up or rusty...

thanks

Of course everything pagoda has some value. As you probably know the hardtops rust in the lower corners so yours would appeal to someone restoring a rusty top. I'd estimate a current value of up to $1000 to the right person (so you're not crazy in my opinion though there are probably easier ways to make money).
Seems to me this post should be in 'for sale'. And while I'm being crusty: about 5 hardtops - didn't you count them before buying? :)

I didn't count the 107 hardtops because to me they are worthless.   There was also a r129 hardtop, I didn't count that either.

I posted something in the for sale section saying that I have 3 hardtops ranging from complete to stripped, but I really have no idea how to price them.

If you were local I would buy a rust-free stripped hard top if the price was right but at $1000 I'd walk away. Maybe half that and I'd be interested. Complete ones are a different matter though and they would have to worth $2000 at least.
Naturally I am only using my UK knowledge so it might be completely irrelevant.

Useful datapoints, thanks.

Sorry, I had not seen that.

For reference I sold a complete hardtop, with a few small rust bubbles, last year for $1400, including a new uninstalled MB headliner. That's Australian dollars, so about $1200 US. It was probably a little below market here in Australia but it was still expensive for the buyer as it cost $700 for pack'n'send delivery to the other side of the country. Parts are cheaper in the US, especially LA, so $500 is perhaps about right but I think you could ask $1000. Depends how fast you'd like to sell it. Maybe Motoring Investments or another local restorer would be interested in the lot.

Two years ago I came across a good hard top complete. It was bought for $500.
You should contact Gernold Nisius in Maine. He has contacts in europe and might be interested in your tops.
You can reach him at www.sltech113.com

Tell him I said to call.
