Title: Limited Slip Differential Oil - Special Oil?
Post by: kampala on July 19, 2014, 00:29:05
Hello,

I am a little confused about the special oil for a Limited Slip Differential.  My local MB dealer could not advise on which oil to use so I got it from the classic center -- they said the correct oil for the LSD is part number A 001-989-33-03-12.

My local mechanic, who was going to change the diff oil for me as it's not easy without a proper lift, asked me to get the special oil and he'll do the change.  Admittedly he's not a specialist on these cars as he works on modern mercedes, however, when I showed him this oil, he wanted me to double check as he is surprised that the weight is so close to standard diff oil.  This mercedes oil is described as: Differential Oil; Hypoid Gear Oil; SAE 75W85.

Also I have read that this oil is a replacement for a no longer avail oil.

Can someone advise if I have the correct oil for a Limited Slip Diff?

Any help would be appreciated.

Dan C, Benz Dr also runs a LSD in his Pagoda so would be a good source of oil recommendation.

Thanks all - appreciated.  Since I'm in California with the car, I can't seem to find the Veedol locally.

After much discussion I went to the Mercedes shop and bought the LSD oil that they sell.  The part number seemed to be for a much newer car but the mechanics said it was the right stuff for my old girl.  Definitely not cheap though.
