Title: Soft Top Installation Help in Virginia
Post by: Hans2012 on July 17, 2014, 13:14:11
I am looking for names of a shop capable of correctly installing a new soft-top on a 250SL located in Charlottesville, Virginia.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Many thanks
John

Therer is a shop in Williamsburg, AUTO HAUS CLASSICS, that specialize on MB classics.  Gus is the one to ask for, tell him that Bob Hyatt sent you.  Hell, I could do it for you, if you are not looking for a shop.

The best place is in maine.
At gernold Nisius shop.
When I was there a month ago he had 6 tops lined up to be repaired and also fitted with new canvas.
They came from all over.
He is excellent and a product of Germany and trained at M/B factory.
Contact him and he will advise as to price and of course shipping.

Tell him I said to call.

Aa far as I'm concerned, and after trying different routes, the man to go to is Gernold of SL Tech in Maine. He's made a jig specifically to straiten and repair the frames and while not cheap, your top installation will last for ever.

I agree, Gernold's SL-Tech is the place to go.
Just had mine done this winter. Besides getting the new canvas installed, Gernold overhauls the entire frame incl. window seals using only MB Parts.
I drove my SL up with the hardtop installed. We took this off and installed the softtop.
Amazing, no adjustments, shims etc. became necessary. The door windows fit the softtop and hardtop perfectly.
Some pictures attached.

I've seen Urban's car in person. The soft top work done by Gernold is extremely well done.
