Hi all. I have a friend whose 280sl was restored but the VIN plate never made it back to the car. Any ideas on how to get a replacement tag? Thanks.

Why not drop Tom a short note, he is most helpful.

I guess you would have to fax him proof of ownership, some details on your car. Fax him your data card if you have it. If you don't have a data card for your car he can provide one for you from his data base. As said Tom is very helpful and if I was in your situation this is what I would do.
Good luck and let us know how you make out.

If you can't find a solution with the classic centre, there is a guy in the USA that recreates VIN plates. I had him do this for a vintage motorcycle and it came out perfectly. About 100$
I have his number somewhere. Let me know if you need it.

Don't even think about buying the VIN plate from the Classic Center, it has little resemblance to the original.
Just ask Michael Salemi http://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=15847.msg118917#msg118917

I obtained a new plate from one of our members who lives in Australia, but they are delivered from Germany, perhaps Garry can help.
Later today I will find the invoice.
Eric.

I know who in Germany does them, so if you are unlucky getting that done in the US let me know. I didn't use him but saw a VIN plate arranged for another member's car and it was perfect.
BTW the guy asks for proof of ownership so I take that he acts ethically.

Looks like we are all talking about the same source. It is "CraigS" in Australia - he is still a member here - who sources the VIN plates from Germany. Just send him an email through the site.

Stan,
of course many of us know Mehmet here, he is also a member.
But as far as I know he does not make the plates for CraigS.
I let Michael Salemi chime in here with his view of who makes the more accurate ones.
-
Yes, CraigS is the guy. He has a woman in Germany who makes them in the old fashioned acid etch method. However he or she cannot EMBOSS them as is required for 100% accuracy. I found a guy who will do this in Pittsburgh. What I had them do for me is make them 100% accurate w/o embossing, and I had it done separately. But as Alfred will concur, the plates are pretty darn good looking!!!

I do concur! What else is there to say, have a look.

I noticed the repro plate shows the seating as 2 in front and 1 in the back so this must be for a car with the kinder seat. My car came with the same seating configuration on the plate even though it does not have the kinder seat. Soon after I took delivery, Mercedes sent me a registered/certified letter pointing out their error. I wonder how many other 280s are out there with the same descripency?

Looks perfect to me indeed :)

OK I LIVE in Pittsburgh. Mike, can you tell who this is and get me contact info? This person would be great to call.

CraigS is the member on the Forum who lives in Australia.
Send him a PM to see if he can make what you need. His plates are very good.
