Title: No Engine Number Stamped.
Post by: 230slhouston on May 11, 2014, 16:25:51
Hi all,
I am taking my cylinder head apart and want to overall it. However, there is no engine number plate or stamp on the engine. Whenever I but engine parts, i am asked the engine number. How do i verify the parts as being correct for my engine? Any other stamps or castings that will help?
Going to buy guides, valves and head gasket set.

Thanks
MBP

Many blocks do not have an engine number stamped on them. My block was replaced under warranty by Mercedes and there is no number on the block. Never had a problem afterwards in getting parts.

It's a good question. In 49er's case, it can be assumed that Mercedes replaced his 280 SL engine with one that is appropriate for his car and the year. But if like 230Slhouston you don't know who, when or by whom the engine was replaced, it becomes more tricky. For all we know his 230 SL has a late-style 280 replacement engine in it. How do you know, short of taking it apart?

I have removed the engine as well as the head. Still have it attached to the transmission. Any casting numbers will help me?
Thanks
