Title: Steering Wheel Hub Replacement
Post by: n/a on August 16, 2004, 09:55:12
Has anyone replaced or repaired the center "upholstered" hub on the steering wheel? Mine has just began to crumble. Can it be repaired or re-upholstered?

The center padded hub is available from all of the usual sources and is realatively inexpensive.  I replaced mine a few years ago and don't recall the exact price but remember thinking that it was reasonable.

The center hub will just pry off.  The replacement hub I received had a different cover than the original and the center star looked different.  Since my cover looked reasonable, I just replaced the center star.

Yes there is an early and late hub. Both are interchangeable and I suspect that the earlier version is no longer available. The early version had the chrome ring around the outer edge. The later hub had no chrome ring.

The early hub was also used on the latest ponton sedans and the finback sedans. the later hubs were used on almost all the Mercedes W108, and early W114 sedans coupes and convertibles. I will  try to post some photos soon.

The early (230sl, early 250sl) centre hubs (chrone ring) have a different mounting stud layout to the later 250sl and 280sl models.
