Title: lines from the radiator
Post by: rmmchl on April 01, 2014, 23:29:48
Does anyone know what kind of fluid runs through the lines that go to the bottom of the radiator?  There are 2 of them. One on drivers side of radiator, and one closest to passenger side. I saw some peeing on the garage floor of a small amount of radiator fluid, and the lines and hoses were wet around the area of the line from the transmission hose  closest to the passenger side. It was not wet where the hose attaches to the radiator. The wetness was about 8 inches from the radiator. It's hard to tell without it being on a rack. There are lots of hoses clamped to metal tubes around there. I was hoping that something needs tightend.

If your SL is automatic, then you have 2 transmission lines attached to the bottom of the radiator for cooling purposes.

That would be transmission fluid flowing through these wouldn't it?  Just wondering if by chance , radiator fluid could be flowing through these.

These 2 transmission lines are hooked to a small radiator inside the large radiator. The coolent would not be able to flow through these 2 lines, only transmission oil. You can follow the lines, you will find that they are connected to steel lines underneath the engine and extend backword to the transmission. I hope this helps.

Hello Mike,

If it is coolant that you are leaking, it could be the water pump starting to seep. Take a good flashlight and try to view the bottom of the water pump.

Joe,  I found a small leak that could be where the radiator fluid drops are coming from. What looks to be where the temp gauge screws into the housing on the engine block , that sits right behind the injection pump, and in front of the first 2 spark plugs. It is wet with  radiator fluid .  could it be leaking here and flowing down and onto one the coolant hoses that are down below, and on the opposite side. Does this seem plausible? It is a fact that the temp gauge is leaking. Is there a washer or something that needs replaced to stop the leaking around where the temp gauge screws in?  I took a  wrench, and tried to tighten it. It seems tight

Mike,

Dry everything off real good. Start the engine and let it reach full running temperature. Look to verify the leak location once more to make sure. The engine fan like to blow any leaking fluids around everywhere. You need to make sure.
