In addition to this car I don't remember seeing this many Pagoda's for sale on ebay. I wonder what's up with that?

Right behind the battery is the two way valve that works with the speed relay to advance the 062 distributor on 70 and 71 280SLs. You can see additional pictures and discussion of this by looking up speed relay.

Ok. This would have been a good riddle...I am just guessing...is that the number for the little rubber firewall lip hood stoppers? (there has to be a better name for them than that!)

James is right.
Strangely enough, my 1965 230SL has these parts, but the 1971 280SL does not. The latter has been repainted in that area, though.
It does seem like a strange oversight not to have these on a car that has been so meticulously restored. Maybe these bumpers were not on the 280SLs after all.

While I think this is an excellent example of a 280 sl restoration, and I certainly hope he gets his price, I am not sure the seller may be realistic in his expectations.
There are countless examples of 280sl selling for a fraction of the total investment in the car.
While there was an auction last spring were a concours quality 280 sold for $75k, that may have not have been representative of the broader market value for these cars.
If the top bid was $50K the seller may be wise to consider it. If he is adamant to get $70k he may have better luck at a Barrett Jackson auction rather than e-Bay.

I was looking at the engine bay of this car and noticed quite a few polished or chrome pieces. I remember reading somewhere that MB actually did some chrome in the engine bay. I believe that the W113 of the late Mr. Frank Mallory had this type of treatment. Can someone elaborate on this? Also if this were the case would it show up on the data card?

Very nice car I think it would do better at a Barret Jackson auction than on E-Bay If a concours judge looked at it there would be little that would not be up to snuff. Some cad plating where there should not be any. And the finger hood release painted black should be aluminum. Not being picky I am just trying to find flaws in what looks to be a faithful restoration. I think that all original versus a high dollar restoration would fetch more money from my jeans but that's just my opinion. As for the high polish many high performance models of the day came with high polish, I am a big fan of high polish. What parts under the hood have you polished? It is a lot of work. But looks very nice when done correctly. Just my opinion.

Two photos of a polished engine.
Did the factory polish some W113 engines? Was this an option?
I thought polish was not factory original and could lead to deductions in a concours show...

Like many things, it depends on what you want. For MB judging, the standard is the way the car left the factory. The high polish is not factory original and would be points off in the concours, most likely on authenticity. The high polish would certainly bring out the "ooh and ah" squad however.
Just curious, but what is the gauge in the bottom right of the polishedeng2.jpg photo?

Am I correct in saying that the softop is missing the front bow that is rivetted to the webbing? We discussed this recently, do the later cars not have the front bow OR the webbing ?

The chrome pieces in the engine bay of The 250sl 5speed belonging to the late Frank Mallory has been brought up before on this site. I am not sure how to do tis link but do a search on Mallory and you will find out about the factory dress up kit.
Perhaps Bob Geco could post some pics of Frank's engine bay.
