Title: Air filter installation
Post by: bsimaz on February 05, 2014, 14:38:33
I'm getting my 220SEb back together and was wondering.  Can the air filter canister be
installed without having to remove the radiator?  I had it out and was repainting it when
I got the radiator back and installed.   Now it seems that the canister won't fit without
taking the radiator back out.   Is there some secret twist or angle that will allow it to go in
or will I have to drain and remove the radiator.

Thanks,

Can you not loosen the brackets/supports that hold the radiator in place and move it out of the way so that the canister goes in without disconnecting the coolant hoses?

I think you have to remove the intake venturi housing.  Not that bad, just four nuts and some plumbing. One of the nuts is a little difficult to get to.

I had my W111 A/F housing out with the radiator not too long ago, but just cannot remember the order I installed them. It had to be manuvered a bit to keep from scrathching it up. Might also check the (3) rubber housing mounts. Would be a good time to replace if original. They look very similar (not the same though) as the fuel pump mounts.

If you do remove the venturi housing, be sure to have a new gasket handy in case the old one tears. I used a very thin coat of Permatex #2 on the new gasket just to prevent any vacuum/oil leaks. Since the crankcase breather tube is just before, you can get a bit of oil slime.
