Title: Hand Brake Assy
Post by: Steven A on December 03, 2013, 12:09:20
Hi

I am hoping some-one can advise what model Mercedes the hand brake assy (as in attached photos) is from.

The vehicle is a 1964 RHD 230SL, which I have owned for around 10 years.    The vehicle has disc (not drum) brakes on the rear (I thought that 230's only had drum?) so possibly a previous owner fitted the disc brakes, and hence the hand brake assy to match.

Not being sure of the model the hand brake assy comes from makes it hard to order parts (the parts shown are from one side....the other side needs the same parts), as they appear different from that shown in the 230SL parts manuals.

Thanks for assistance and guidance.   The Pagoda SL Group has been a very helpful forum!

Regards

Steven

Assuming that you need to replace the shoes, the PN is 1264200120 and they are standard for a number of models (113, 108, 123, 114, 126, 107, etc.).  So you shouldn't have any trouble finding them at a dealer or online.

The 230 has drum brakes. If you have discs, then someone has changed the rear end, maybe to get better gearing. If you're remotely interested, you could look at the data card and see what ratio the car had when built, then look to see what it has now. The diff could also have been changed to address a malfunction. As Chuck says, the parking brake shoes are cheap and readily available. Odd that they're worn, as they just hold the car in place rather than brake it. Unless my wife or some other lady driver has borrowed you car... ::)

Item 7 on your data card will give you the serial number of the rear axle fitted when it left the factory.
Maybe what you could do to is to identify the serial number on the axle you have and back track from there as to what MB year and model it is from.

Here is the blowup for the 280 that it may be or one of the sedans of the era that had the same or similar setup.

To all,

Thanks for the information.

Looking at the information, it is a 250SL hand brake assy ....  now on a 230SL.   This gives me enough info to move forward (and I will check the item 7 on data card).      Bud's have provided me with quite a few parts over the last few years!
