I recall that the bolts on Mercedes from the 50's had larger hex-head sizes than modern hardware. ex: 8mm bolts and nuts had a 14mm hex head.
I am not sure where the break year would be, possibly some early Pagodas were made this way.

As far as I know all bolts used a stand metric size head with the exception of the bolts holding the fan and spacer to the water pump which at 8mm usies a 10mm head rather than 13mm so you can clear the bolts on the underside of the fan clutch. I din't recall ever seeing an over sized head on any of he bolts.
I have taken apart over ten Pagodas over time, but I could be wrong. Any body else?

I know some of the early 60's cars used some of the old hardware sizes. 14mm head bolts and 14mm (wrench size) nuts. !3mm head bolts and 13mm (wrench size) nuts came later. All the 50s MBs used the 14mm (wrench size) hardware.
I am presently working on an early 1963 220SE Cab. W111. It still has the 14mm wrench size hardware that Al speaks of. I tend to believe that the earliest W113 cars may have also used the 14mm (wrench size hardware). Even the valve cover hold down bolts on these engines, use 14mm wrench size bolts.

When I did my restoration, I changed out all the bolts, washers, nuts, screws, etc with stainless steel ones. I know in some cases the bolts might have some difference in strength, but where I used them I don't think it would be a problem. I just did not want any more rusted bolts to show up in time. Peter is correct, there are a few odd sized MM bolts that I could not find an SS bolt to replace it, so I purchased from MBCC the new replacements.

Yes, absolutely correct.
Early Pagodas and same-aged Daimler cars (until about sometime in 1965) had all M8 metric screws with a 14 mm head instead 13 mm.
Not easy to come by nowadays,at least not the Kamax' and NSFs. Luckily I kept most of my original screws, and only few of those need replacement.
