Title: Footwell rubber mats

Iam ready to install the MB supplied rubber footwell mats in my '63 230SL. I need to know if they sould be secured with adhesive or just the Alum. knob type screw pins? When I bought the car the previous owner had installed carpet in the footwells, so I have no :?:  clue as how the rubber mats should be secured. Luckly I found the Alum. knob pins under the old carpet when I took it out.

Are you talking about the mats that go over the carpet?

No adhesive, just the 4 tabs/pins..
 There should be sound insulation under them. If it has been removed , [which happens when floors have been redone],you can purchase it at  auto stores in 1 foot squares/packs with  stick-on backing and custom fit/cut it.

Thanks A Dalton for your reply. The sound insulation has been installed same as the original material. According to the "Chronological Order of 113 Changes" list the rubber footwell mats were replaced by carpet beginning Jan 1968 for the 280SL.

 250 was last year of the mats..

Hey Paul.

As a fellow "early Pagoda" owner, I am curious what the original mats cost you. I redid my carpet with a German Squareweave kit from Star Quality that came with a standard drivers side piece (not the rubber mat type)... My car still has the pins though (always wondered what they were!). Thanks.

PS regarding that sound insulation...Unfortunately, I discovered that rust can hide under the original stuff -- it can be deceiving because that stuff is hard as a rock after 40 years... only by scraping off the old stuff, did I see I had real troubles.

James, Ordered mats from Ray Paul at SL Classics. They are MB "factory" mats from Germany. Cost $77.50 each plus S&H about $9.00. The left mat (drivers side) does not have the cutouts for the steering column, dimmer switch, bottom gas pedal mount & gas pedal stop pad. Made a pattern out of thin cardboard for cutting the holes. Very very scary.

Paul,

The mats in my 230 SL, built in Sept. 1966, are held down by these screws.  I'll take a pic and we'll see if they are the same screws you have.  They screw directly into the metal floor boards!
