Title: Throttle damper - dashpot
Post by: Oisin on November 03, 2013, 16:36:37
After much humming and hawing, I decided to replace my dashpot which had never worked.  The car had suffered from backfires, stalling and not exactly slick gearchanges.  Happy to say that the commonly available (in the US that is) Wells /Carter DP103 Dashpot (Mopar part #J8127729) has made a significant impact on all these.  A big bonus is that there is no longer the same need to feather the throttle to maintain revs.  The part was available through ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USA-NOS-MoPar-J8127729-Wells-DP103-Carburetor-Dash-Pot-Carter-Carb-Jeep-D5-121F-/400575839344?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5d442e3c70 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USA-NOS-MoPar-J8127729-Wells-DP103-Carburetor-Dash-Pot-Carter-Carb-Jeep-D5-121F-/400575839344?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5d442e3c70) and needed only slight modification to work.  You will need to extend the 5/16" UNF threaded part (I used the threaded part from the old dashpot and married it to a half inch long coupling nut or manifold nut).  Also the pin end is slightly shorter (you can live with this or swap the pins with the original - they pull out).  Just back from a spin and the results were very good - much smoother driving.  Do it if you haven't already - definately worth it.  All credit to George Davis's and Tom Kizer's contribution on the subject.

Thanks! That damper looks just right. It's good to know the thread extension method works as that's what I was planning on my new one (for which I paid twice the price). I didn't know the pin pulls out - also helpful.

The main difference is this item uses a 5/16-24 TPI (Threads Per Inch) imperial fine thread. A great substitute for the no longer available original part.
