Or should I say "what WE did"... a buddy of mine directed me to a 1968 280SL last April supposedly rust free but in need of a "cosmetic" restoration. Over a Saturday morning coffee with my dad, he urged me to buy it to "fix up". We actually bought it together and worked on it together...mostly after work and on weekends along with some invaluable help from friends including another forum member here, Urban Janssen. In the end, it was a California car with all original body panels and yes...never, ever rusted. For those who know me, they know I'm not much of a mechanic (my brother has owned a transmission shop since 1974...go figure) so I guess I ended up as the General Contractor in this instance. Some work we did ourselves, and some was left to the specialists (including paint). My Light Ivory 230SL did not need as much work as this one so a great deal of the effort was new to me and in turn, many members of the Forum (John-49'er, Alfred, George Des, Michael, Naj and others) really came through for me on this project.
Aside from the photos below of my dad at work (he'll be 92 in January) and the car in Urban's garage...check out the link to the finished photos ...

Since these were taken, we have replaced the heat-defrost levers and the steering wheel with a new one from MB. CONSTRUCTIVE criticism is welcomed!

Hi Kevin,
indeed a very nice 45 year old car ... but who ever kept your Dad looking that good at twice the age deserves even more praise!
-
Rust free is indeed a rare and great find.
Well done. Looks like it keeps your dad fit and healthy.

This looks fantastic. What a great find and what a great project to take on with your Dad and friends.
Now comes the most difficult part .... which one to drive? :D Congrats.

Your Dad 92, you kidding us!!!!!

Nice car :) :)

He claims "it's the olive oil!"

Thanks to all.
Here's a few more pics...
Notice the only one WORKING in the last shot!

Kevin, that looks like an exceedingly nice car… and Kudo's to your dad too…

Kevin: Great job. You should all be congratulated and should all be justly proud of your achievements. Did you notice the price on the car? This car was a European delivery car.
The Marine Insurance is the obvious hint, not to mention the price which is about $1200-1500 under the US delivered price.

Very nice Kevin and like Oz said, now the hard part, which one to drive. I guess there are a few others here on the forum that have that "problem" as well. Must be tough :)

Kevin, great job and a beautiful pagoda. Enjoy the ride.
The youngest baby is always the most beautiful pagoda, for me it's still like that.

Wow, nice find, nice color. Now that you are really familiar with the 230, how does the 280 compare?
-
Kevin,
let me congratulate you (constructively, off course :D)
looks like you and your Dad had a very rewarding time together...
thanks for sharing

Kevin,
Now I understand why you left the relative paradise of Delray Beach for the frozen north. Nice car, nicer story.
Your former neighbor,

Thanks for all of the positive reinforcement!
I have been lucky with this car in so many ways of course, its condition first. Secondly. I took a shot this summer and "Googled" the name on the data plate. Don't you know that the original owner is alive and well and still living at the SAME address on the plate?!? He shared the documentation with me and also the photo below (we know that the second owner added the bumper guards). Long story short, he was an enlisted man in 1968 stationed in California. He ordered the car after seeing the 230SL brochure with the red car on the cover! He bought it through a program available to the military at that time which explains the "European" delivery. As I understand it somehow as part of this program, you didn't have to pay the shipping cost!
For another "lucky" story... see the link below....

Amazing you were able to find the original owner and to get that great photo as well. Those black plates are pretty close to mine so I imagine he registered his car around July or August of '68 some where in the LA area.
