Hi all,
Went to adjust the alternator the other day as it seemed to move a lot. The alternator was fitted with a new belt about forty miles ago by SL SPECIALISTS. Is the main adjustor, the one with the locking nuts rubber mounted onto the block, there seems to be a lot of muck coming out of the nut. I tightened the bottom nut because it was loose. It seems now that the alternator after it was adjusted is out of alignment with the water pump. There seems to be a few washers inbetween the bolt on the adjustor at the top. I have not as yet looked to see if there are any washers at the bottom of the alternator bolt. If the adjustor is rubber mounted do you buy a new adjustor?

Does your car have A/C ? If it does you will have a different bracket to mount your alternator than the one that came with the car. Early 230's have a metal bracket that holds the alternator in place which was replaced with a cast iron bracket. Personally, I find the cast iron bracket to be better than the early type with all of those rubber bushings and sheet metal cups.
If you have alingment problems it's likely because some of those bushings and metal sleeves are missing. You can get all of those parts in a kit ( I think ) or you can replace the bracket with the later cast iron type. One of the studs in the block may need to be moved or removed to do this. If you end up going this route it may leave an opened hole directly into the crank case of the engine. This happened to me once and a lot of oil poured out before I found the source. A short screw with an aluminium seal behind it will fix this problem.
