Title: soft top frame compatibility
Post by: dakman29 on September 26, 2013, 16:21:50
Can you tell me whether a frame from a 64 230sl can be installed on a 68 280sl?

Pretty sure you can, also has the advantage that forward clamping levers remain attached
making the raising/lowering operation a little simpler.

If I recall, Larry speaks from experience, his 280 is fitted with a 230 soft top.

Yes Neil you remember correctly, I am just not sure whether a really early ('64)
is any different? Probably not.

I thought you also had an early soft top on your 280 Neil?

Also remembered well Larry, I think mine is a fairly early one as I also have the aluminum trim that fits onto the wooden bow above the rear window. The early soft top frames, in my opinion are much better quality than the later 280 ones like I took off

Ok but mine must be a later one, no wooden bow.

Met a Dutch guy at Beaulieu a couple of years ago with a green 280.
It had the same soft top mechanism as mine and he insisted his was totally
original, he had owned and then imported it from the States when he returned
to Holland to work. :-\ :-\
