Title: need help on removing seat backs
Post by: rutger kohler on August 26, 2013, 00:07:32
Hi, just ready to remove the cards on the back on the seats to put my new carpet on.  Have looked at the Technical Manual, and several posts on the subjects and it seems I need to remove the whole back off the seat to do this.  One post desribes removing the rosettes or big plastic round knobs but I can't see where you get into them to remove. There is a chrome ring  on the end of the rosette, do you prise this off to get at a holding screw inside?

If I remember correctly you remove two screws at the bottom of the card and then just slide
it out downwards. It may be possible to slide down enough to clear the top channel and then
bend the card slightly and pull out from the side channels. I found it easier to make new cards
rather than remove the carpet from the old cards, the carpet was really well stuck!
Obviously this is much easier with the seat out of the car.

Hi Larry, thanks for that, I tried to "bow" the card to get it out past the chrome rod at the bottom of the seat mechanism, that runs right across the back of the seat, and the card shattered in several pieces so i thuoght you must be meant to remove the chrome rod somehow?

Hi Rutger,

I installed head rests at the same time so may have had the seats completely apart.
New cards are easy to make using the old one as a template. I can't remember as to
whether I used 3mm mdf, plywood or hardboard? My cards had carpet both sides so
it had been replaced at least once by reversing the cards.

Hi, I would still like help on how to remove the chrome rod running across the bottom of the seat assembly. Alternatively a clear description on how to remove the whole seat back off the seat assembly

I didn't remove the chrome rod when I redid mine.  I removed the two screws at the bottom and the 4 screws that hold on the chrome pieces where I assume the headrest would go if I had one.  Then you slide the card down about a 1/4 inch (6mm) and bow it slightly by reaching under it at the bottom.  Then it will pop out from the side channels.

Surprised you don't have an answer yet,  to get the tilt adjustment rod out (oops another assumption) you have to take the knob off, the chrome cover off, disengauge the rack springs on bothsides.  Then the rod can be pulled out.   **Don't forget to put the rod back in before you put the card back in. **  Words of hard learned wisdom.

I couldn't get the cards out with the seat back in place either.

When I replaced my carpet, after removing the screw, I used the lever on the side to fold the seat back forward, then slid the capeted cardboard down. Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the help, The new carpet for the seat backs,  which i got from KHM, has a MBtex flap on the bottom.  I guess this bends around the bottom of the card to make a nice finish to the bottom.  Is the 3mm card would be too thin to staple on the back, should I just glue this on the underside? BTW, I got the old cards out and they were both broken so I have made new ones.

Hi James, thanks for that, that's what I will do.  Might glue on the carpet side first and then bend round and glue on the back afterwards, after the front has had 24 hrs.

Be sure to punch new screw holes from the back into the new carpet before you install the completed back  ... otherwise you'll be in for a long "hole hunt".  :)
Also it might help to slightly bevel the edge of the new carpet (especially if it is square weave, less so with velour) with a scissor. It will slide easier into the channel.
