Title: Engine number
Post by: 280sl1968 on July 12, 2013, 15:28:00
Just been trying to find the engine number on my 280SL. I might need to get closer with a torch, but all I can read is 130 980. No other numbers.

There is no separate tag either attached just at that spot below the spark plugs.

I'm assuming at some point, the engine, or part of it, has been replaced.

My question is, for replacement/exchange units, were they typically given a unique number, or were these replacement engines effectively 'numberless'? I'm not overly concerned, it's just the engine number is a question on my UK registration forms, and as far as I can see, this engine no longer has a unique identifier.

My engine block was replaced by Mercedes under warranty due to excessive oil consumption. The block has no number which is not uncommon.

Replacement engines, as far as I am aware, did not have a number. You can stamp one in, even the original one.
