Title: Trunk Lid Pad
Post by: Jonny B on June 13, 2013, 22:34:08
I was looking at a very high end 250 SL restoration project some weeks ago, and noticed that there was no rectangular pad under the middle "X" brace for the trunk lid. This is a late edition 250 SL, US model. The pad is shown in the US 250 SL - 280 SL parts book, but not the others. I am curious to learn if this was there for all the 113 cars, just the US cars, just US cars after the DOT equipment change??? My suspicion is that it is supposed to be there for all cars, but would like to get some evidence/data on that.

Thanks in advance.

My early '63 230SL came from Italy, it has the trunk lid pad.

Here a couple of pictures of mine. Pad is made of black felt, approximately  3/8" (10mm) thick, uncompressed. I have a 280SL but doubt if they changed pads from the 230/250's.

BTW, the Michelin tag was put on by the "4 Day Tire" store back in '71. Anybody remember them?
