Does anyone know for sure when MB began putting the metal ID tags with the engine/chassis/owners info in the glovebox packets of the 113 cars? Keith

Does no one have any input? I know I have a '71 280 that DOES have the metal tag. But how much earlier did it start? kb

Mine is a '67 manufacture and I have the this owner's metal plate.

Thanks Kampala, does your tag look like this and does it fit in a clear plastic sleeve like this one? kb

280sl delivered 12/68 has one as per your pictures

Yes. Metal tag is exactly like the one you pictured. I cannot confirm the plastic sleeve as I think it's similar but cannot check it as I am far from the car.

I have one with my U.S.-spec 1967 230SL, manufactured in 1966. But the interesting thing about mine is it is not for my car, but for someone else's! The chassis number is close but doesn't match. My guess is the dealer somehow got them mixed up. But that's just a guess. Very unfortunate, because it shows the original buyer's name (well, a business).
I believe these tags were used by the dealer service departments when you brought your car in, and were used to stamp the invoice, sort of like the old credit card machines.
