Hi all -
Just joined today but I've owned my '69 280 SL for about 12 years. Recently I've been having problems with the transmission not holding when I put her in PARK. She'll roll a bit and there will be a clicking sound. Taking her to my mechanic next week, but figured I'd check and see if anyone else had this issue, or might help me diagnose the issue. I have always found forums to be the best source of help with nice, passionate people.

Most likely it's the transmission linkage that needs adjusting, may also need bushing or both.

Hello Corey,
As mentioned, the shift linkage rod has two replacable plastic bushings that fail due to deterioration with age. They are just a few dollars each. Have them replaced now and save a tow bill later. The ratcheting noise is usually the result of the transmission not quite going into park because of the worn bushings. The shift rod can be removed by unfastening and lifting the shifter assembly inside the car and popping the linkage loose on the transmission.

Suggest that they also check that the shift lever is not close to dragging on the plate that supports the transmission mount. This happens with collapsed motor and transmission mounts. No sense in replacing the bushings only to have the lever start hitting the plate.

Thanks everyone. I've printed out your advice so I can give it to my mechanic. He's very familiar with the car and I trust him completely, but I feel better knowing what the issue is, and what to tell him. Thanks again.
