James,

Was the engine making much noise - it looks like the valve was just "kissing" the piston.

This will happen when the valves are out of time with the pistons. One tooth out will cause the valves to hit heavily and you can hear it happening. This almost looks like a different problem where the head has been milled too much or you had a lot of carbon on the pistons.

Or, it was out of time.

I'll bet the head has been skimmed too often.

Prizes to all!

Head skimmed in a previous life but it had been done half way up a mountain and thus I had less head at #5 and 6 than at #1. The oil problem and this "kissing" resulting.

I'd been told the engine had never been restored. (by the salesman!). That may be the case but whoever opened it, skimmed it and retorqued everything too much must have done something while he was in there!

Hello James,

Measuring the head will give you the information you need.

Normally you wait until a week or so before a big European Event to start to pull your car apart. Why so early this time?  ;D

(Not that I can talk; progress has actually been negative rather than simply slow...)

Did you do any of the rebuild yourself ?
