Title: Euro headlight conversion - no fog light
Post by: rubenpadron on April 27, 2013, 07:48:04
Hi all,

I have a 1969 280SL US-spec that I just converted to Euro headlight. Everything works well, except for the fog lights. After doing some searches, I couldn't come up with a definitive answer as to whether my US car is wired to work with the Euro headlights or not (some posts seem to allude that it's not, but nothing definite).

As far as I can tell, the fog bulbs seem fine (they're the cool yellow ones, btw, which makes me believe these euro lights might have come from a French car).

Does anyone know definitively if my car is wired for these fog lights? If it's not wired, has anyone successfully wired the stock headlight switch to work the fog lights when switch is pulled? Any tips/help you can share?

Thanks!

As far as I recall, I did get the fog lights to work with the standard US wiring when I converted my headlamps over to Euro. Car is 150 miles away right now so can't be 100% sure, but I am 95 (% sure).

Thanks Cees for the input!

If anyone else has confirmation, please let me know... I'll start the troubleshooting process in the meantime and post back with findings in case anyone else is wondering like me in the future!

Thanks,

Ok looks like my car has no electricity being sent to the fog lights... A closer inspection of the manual (here: www.sl113.org/wiki/Electrical/Lightswitch#Headlight) revealed that I missed an important footnote to the 280SL diagram: "On late USA-delivered 280SL cars the fog light function is disabled".

Bummer...

Further reading on the switch itself reveals that the wiring may be there but is not connected.  ???  I'll have a look tomorrow to see if it's indeed there and can be connected. In the meantime, does anyone know if the wiring harness would be different between a US and RoW car?

Thanks!
