Title: Automatic Shifter Bushing

So question, I have the shifter from my 280 sl out, (auto and new bushings on order)

My Bushing is stuck to the shifter, broke out of the connecting rod side, which is fine, but it brings up a question.

When rehooking this all up, which sounds tricky.  Which end to connect first - put bushing on the shifter first, or on the connecting rod first?

With the shifter assembly removed, I found it easiest to connect to the shifter first. I also used a length of wire as a "pull" to help guide the connecting rod to the transmission but it mat not really be necessary.

the connecting rod to the transmission seems fine.  My issue is the shifter to the connecting rod.
it looks like bushing is on the left of the connect rod (which I swear are different from the pictures on the technical manual)

Sounds like your bushing has shifted.  The bushing goes all the way through the long rod on both ends.  It "Pops" into the hole on each end.  If it is outside, you have found your problem.  When you replace these bushings, pay close attention to the which side of the bushing is facing in and out.
 
They will only work one way.  Don't ask how I know.  :o

Could you have the connecting rod the wrong way round?

Not sure it's possible but just a thought.
