Looks like we have another very original 280SL car for reference.
Go to: http://www.motoringinvestments.com/MainPage.htm
and look at this 1970 280SL - absolutely stunning!

That's amazing! I think the asking price is actually too low! Cars like that are far superior to any concours resto in my mind.

Can anybody explain why one of his 'holy grail' cars appears to have undercoating, and the other does not?

That's because one of the Graals is a bit more holy than the other ;)

Very nice Pagoda.  One thing not original................... the battery hold down.  It's missing !  As is the distributor coil wire boot and possibly the plastic distributor cover.

The battery hold-down isn't just missing, it's got one of those awful universal hold-downs because it has the wrong type of battery.  It has the lowered posts that prevent the use of the original hold-down.  Maybe they left it in there so the buyer could do one thing to improve it.

Look at the alignment of the glove box door - best I have ever seen.

The "Holy Grail"  also has it's muffler clamped-on instead of welded as was the original.  In addition the chrome tail pipe ends are after-market, the originals are notched at the top and are longer. Also the heat shield is missing from the front of the rear muffler hangar assembly. May as well add that the third hood/firewall rubber bumper strip is missing.
