Title: rust hole under kinder seat
Post by: bjudd on March 15, 2013, 16:44:42

Just found a rust hole under kinder seat.  Was there a drain hole tube here?

Advice?

Thank you,

Brian

There is a drain in the lower rear  soft top seal on the passenger side that directs the water out tof the soft top compartment. It is the size of a pencil. I don't believe there is a drain the floor under the kinder seat.

Its really hard to tell from the photo but it looks to me like there was a previous repair below the current rust hole next to where it meets the carpet .  My guess is that the rust came from below and just broke through the previous repair.

I don't have a kinder seat but had enough water to rust through the bottom of the metal below the parcel shelf on both sides.  In the picture I attached you can see that it was repaired previously so there appears to be a path for water to collect in that area.

There's no drain hole there but I put one in when I restore a car.
It's a water trap and they always rust there.
I've recently seen an example where an owner spent €140,000 (yes, that one for regular readers) less than two years ago and it's already started to rust there..

I'm no rust expert but it looks like the corrosion started on the undercarriage side and wormed it's way up.

Thanks for the input.  I'll let you know what I find when I dig into the wound.    :)
