I'm looking for opinions from the group on the current market value for a 1969 280SL 4speed. The car is silver with black interior, and has had the following work done:
-Metric Motors rebuilt engine, new clutch, new injector nozzles, all with less than 15K miles.
-Interior completely and professionally restored with leather and carpeting from GAHH.
-New factory exhaust
-New Michelin MXV 185/14 tires
-Hard top (headliner needs replacing)
-Original Becker radio
The car spent most of it's life in San Diego and has very little rust. Odometer shows 36K miles. Small amount of surface rust in the trunk and in the bottom of the compatment behind the seats. Dime size rust spot on the trunk lip visible when lid is open (partially under the rubber seal) Convertible top tired but functional. Engine compartment not detailed. Newer paint shows very well except for a couple of shallow "golf ball?" dings - visiible under certain lighting conditions. Otherwise shiny and of good quality. No evidence of accidents - fender notches and rivets are intact in the usual places. Chrome looks perfect. Car drives solid and tight. Original tool kit, original colors. Car is located in British Columbia, Canada.
Anyone care to venture an opinon on market value?
Thanks,
Steve

69 being one of the most desirable I would say 35 to 40K

Thanks guys. How is eBay as a venue for selling the car, providing it is presented well with good quality photos?

On the first question, my comment is that while the categories are easy to understand, the gig is to map sure which category the car you are looking at belongs to. In my case I thought that I am buying a well restored car, the description of work done was impressive. later on it turned out that many items were described in inaccurate or even false way. For ex. renovated boot floor appeared to be just a plastic layer painted in the correct dark gray. But while checked during the current renovation, I had to buy the entire floor sheets etc etc.
On the second topic: eBay is a great source of stuff, but a thorough check is a must.
So, as you may find elsewhere in this forum, it would be a wise move to go there with a mechanic and if the car is far away, you will easily find a local appraiser, including by asking on this forum.
Having said that, check some other posts about people considering buying and restoring Pagodas in the form of true rust buckets, so as they say Pagoda is an addictive disease, once you get it….

You need to post some pictures..
$40k to $60k sounds plausible if its nice. The one I posted a link to on ebay is currently at $62k and sounds similar.
