Today I saw a Pagoda undergoing reiteration at the shop when I do my engine. The car had its engine taken out so I could have a look at it. Ig got confused as it had clearly stated 280 SE/A symbol indicating that it was a replaced engine from 280 SE. Nothing unusual, although quite pity.
However, the numbers underneath indicated it was a SL engine as it stated 130 983 and not 130 980…
Below is the pic, although not easily readable.
Do you have any view on that mystery? ???

Hi Stan,
It's possible the head was changed sometimes in the past, it's very common I have the exact same cylinder head in my 70 280se coupe.
-
That's the correct head from a late 280SL.

Thanks all for the input, it's always an opportunity to learn, which is great at this site.
Dan, I gather you meant 280SL, not 290SL???
-
Benz Dr. just curious, was the 290 SL a late model option????????
-
Perhaps 290 is what you get when you go to max overbore ... ;-)

It is, but I figured you'd already know that. Also, I need reading glasses which I forget everywhere because I only need them for close up work. I leave a pair in my car, shop, office and house. Of course, I move them around then and forget where they are.
Hope this clears up any doubts about my failings. Whatever I had, I forgot where I put it........

Dan
Hope this is only happening when you write threads on this site, and not when you restore Pagodas, otherwise a highly innovative 290 SL is quite likely to emerge from your garage ;D
My advice: switch to contact lenses ;)

see for yourself…. you REALLY need a young and motivating assistant…. but with such bad sight, would you be able to distinguish the pretty from the ugly one? :D
