Title: Repro Chrome Parts
Post by: getsmart on October 09, 2012, 08:52:57
Hi all,

A general question on repro chrome parts.....
There are repro bumper bars available on ebay in Brisbane, Australia. Has anyone purchased any of these ? They are very cheap $239 aud but without seeing them its very difficult to purchase with any confidence. They come from Taiwan.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/140849029515?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_4422wt_962

How about peoples general experience with repro chrome parts ? I mean there's chrome and there;s chrome. 3 stage chroming, etc, quality of polishing and repairs too on getting old parts re-chromed. To get a front bumper bar done in Melbourne is approx $400 aud...for a top notch better than oriiginal ....

Welcome peoples thoughts and comments,

Regards, Joe  :)

Hey Joe,

I have both the original and after market sets, I bought the after market one to save money but it just didn't cut it for me although the newer ones seem to be a bit better quality I purchased mine a few years ago, at the end I ended up rechromimg my old one instead. The after market ones just don't have the deep chrome look that the original have.
But then again it all has to do with how picky one is!

Cheers,

Hi Joe,

I bought a set of the repro and they are on the car - slightly thinner metal (I think) but the fit was perfect and the shine looks good to me. My only comment was that one of the captive nuts came loose which was a pain in the you know what but not the end of the world and the join cover strip was made of stainless and not chromed (you don`t see this much anyway because of the number plate).

If my bumpers had been repairable and or rechromable I probably would have done that but because it was a smash repair, that wasn`t an option.

All in all they don`t detract from the car.

Cheers

Hi Joe

I have a set of front bumpers still unopened (bought about 6 months ago) - if you want to have a look you are welcome and you can see for yourself. I have an old repaired crease in mine (on the car) and the joining strip is terrible so I thought I would put a set in stock.
I owe you a visit anyway - so let me know.

Richard, Joe,

I am now back also and like Richard also have a spare set of the repo's.  Sounds like a good excuse to get together. My car is still in bits but somewhere in Melb we could get together??

Bought some chrome trim parts from this guy in Poland http://www.retroteile.pl/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=12&Itemid=9&lang=en
Really heavy, hand-made quality (think it's chrome on brass) and really good fit. As far as I remember they were not cheap, but not expensive either considering the quality...
