Title: seat backs
Post by: Jkalplus1 on October 01, 2012, 16:32:17
On '64 cars ordered in dark blue leather, it is said in the technical manual the matching carpet is a shade of gray square loop.  Does it mean the seat backs (where the 2 chrome mesh vents are) are of that gray as well?  Which would mean the seat is dark blue, and the seat back is gray?

Thanks,

Jerome

Jerome,
Correct.  If your data card calls for grey carpet, then the seat backs are gray carpet.  Whatever is on the floor is on the setbacks.

Hello Jerome,
Bob is of course right here. ;)
However, the problem is that for your 1964 car (up to VIN 012466 I mean) the carpet was not grey or charcoal or whatsoever, it was blue! :o
The Tech Manual is not incorrect here, but incomplete. 8)
The Daimler AG changed carpet colors in August 1965 (i.e. from VIN 012467 on for the 230 SL) when the new W108 chassis was presented for sale.

Your car should originally have (dark to medium) blue carpet, which is NLA for centuries.

There _is_ a somehow replacement available today but only with about 5-6 loops per inch, not 7. The color match is pretty good but not perfect.
Please see Alfred's post in

... then you'll get an idea what the original carpet is/was about. :D

My two cents,
if you have already charcoal carpet go with it.
If you have to renew your carpet set, go look out for the blue one.

Best,
Achim

Wow, thanks Achim.

My car is 006466, so the right colour is therefore blue.

It is presently blue, and brand new since the car was restored, but in the nice wool aftermarket product, not the more correct-looking square loop.

Thanks for the info,

Jerome

Hello Jerome,

My 2 cents....
Leave it as is. ;)
