Title: Engine Stalling after "hard acceleration"
Post by: Col Webb on September 15, 2012, 23:32:38
I have a 230 SL with 250 head and later model fuel injection pump.  Ive cleaned the fuel tank, replaced the fuel pump, replaced the fuel filter, replaced the spark plugs with a higher temp model (due to buildup). Engine is running rich but mechanic has been unable to fix. Cold start valve appears to be ok.  The engine will stall after hard excelleration if gas pedal is released.  Thereafter engine is hard to start (as if no fuel) pumping gas pedal help start. Once started engine runs ok. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Chuck

Hello Chuck,

Make sure that the engine linkages are ok. Go through the "linkage tour"   Verify that the engine is running rich by doing a "split linkage test" at different RPMS. Make sure all the other tuning items are correct.

If the  engine does still run rich at all speed ranges, you can remove some shims from under the "baro compensator"  or adjust the IP rack to lean the mixture in all speed ranges. Let us know if you are familiar with these procedures.

Joe, Thanks for the response. I dont know the procedures but will go through the linkage tour. Does it explain the tests? Thanks Chuck

Hello Col,

Look over the information then get back with us with lots of questions. We'll be around.

Thanks for the help, did the linkage tour. They were out of spec. Running much better now with no stalling. still smells like running a little rich. Chuck

I'm the guy who tested almost everybody's tail pipe CO at the last PUB.  Trust me, you can't rely on smell to determine if it's a "bit rich."  Find someone with a Gunson Gastester or equivalent, and find out what's really going on at idle and 3000 rpm.
