Title: Fitting an original Becker Mexico
Post by: UK280SL on June 21, 2012, 11:07:59
I am currently getting my 69 280SL retrimmed.  I thought at the same time I would get the radio upgraded so I have taken out the modern radio and bought a beautifully restored period Becker Mexico from Koenigs Classics.  My question is about fitting this Becker radio.  The trimmer is concerned that it doesn't have any chassis to fit into unlike the modern radio that was taken out.

Having searched the forum I did find one previous thread that made reference to some mounting bolts (picture attached) which my car does not have but the thread was not entirely clear for my needs.  I also asked Koenigs who said it didn't need any mounting brackets but simply slotted in the front.  However there were a few language challenges so my trimmer is still not entirely confident.

I would be very grateful if someone with a becker mexico fitted in their pagoda could explain simply (I'm not at all technical and neither is my trimmer) how the radio is fitted and secured in and does it need any fittings as per the attached photo.

Kind regards and many thanks

Warren

Yes it will need these fittings and also an 'L' shaped bracket for the rear of the radio.
If you carefully take the front panel off the radio it should become clear how the fittings work.
There may be a problem if the aperture has been made larger to fit the modern rtadio.

The front anchors in your pic slide in behind the front plate (which comes off easily when you take off the knobs) and anchors to dash.  However it does put alot of strain on the dash so you also need the rear anchor.  If you dash is cut then all bets off and you have a bigger issue.

Many threads on this topic.  Here is my recent thread on the topic that someone was nice enough to post a pic.

Found these guys stock the part for the rear anchor - http://www.authenticclassics.com.  Was considering making my own but part was cheap.  Saw another company in Germany that also stocks it.  Can dig it up if that helps.

Thank you so much for the replies and especially the last link. I must be losing the plot because I'm sure when I looked myself I got to a page with a much more complicated diagram in German, which was side on and unintelligible to me... I've no idea wher it was or how I go there but this makes much more sense.  Once again, many thanks.
