I was wondering whether it is normal to have quite large gaps under the soft top on the sides. My first pagoda looked the same so I guess it is normal...

The soft top should not have a gap between the bottom edge and the top of the body. It should fit smoothly and evenly.

The gaps in the soft top occur in the fabric at the B pillar, behind the door. The rubber seal starts about 10cm to the rear. The purpose of these gaps is to serve as an evacuation of air, so that an air flow from the fresh air vents and/or heating ducts is enabled.
However, on your photos, the gap seems excessive.
On the HardTop, the corresponding air flow is enabled via the air outlet at the rear top, above the rear window.
