Title: Paintwork Detail
Post by: tankowner on May 30, 2012, 10:18:31

Currently restoring my 280SL . Painting the exterior - can you please advise the finish below the doors - the continuous
rail which is finished in a 'stone finish I call it slightly textured'. Should this be painted the same colour as the body or Black?
Also the finish under the fenders ( in Australia we call them mudguards!)
 Thanks from Downunder.

Have a read of this thread, we have had this discussion many times and I think we have finally come to the correct answer for the sills.

Thanks Gary for the link. I have just studdied every MB book with colour photos.
And I conclude that 280sl got a Matt Black over 'anti-chip' finish, I believe earlier models got the dark grey.
Those that are painted 'Body Colour' are incorrect and certainly does not look as good.
So Black is it and also under the wheelarches. These should be body colour but after 40+ years have been a
bit knocked around and will look awful in 'off white'.

You have obviously recently refurbed your 230SL.
