Title: Replacing gas cap on 71 280sl?
Post by: 280sl1971 on May 21, 2012, 02:36:53
Folks;,

Need some advice.  After 40 years, and the latest body overhaul and respray, and interior replacement, the rear needs to have a bit of sparkle.  The original gas cap is tatty and badly stands out amongst the shiny chrome and new paint.

There are several options - OE polished locking, vented, non locking, unvented....lock/unlock is no big deal to me, but is there any opinion on vented/unvented?

Thanks,

Bill

Absolutely not vented (or ohne Lüftung in German)!

Hello Bill,

000 471 4730 Tankverschluß Ymos Cap, gas filler 280SL from VIN#010356. ;)

Everything else is incorrect and will not do justice to your newly refinished car.
Okay, it's pricy but you will get over it after a while.

Alternatively: rechroming your old one. But pot metal is often refused by the chrome shops.

Good luck, ;)

Uh oh ....
I shall ruin your day ....? :( :o ???

You can look up here:

Yikes, the late style gas cap (= one key fits all) is NLA; only the earlier style gas cap (for the cars with three keys) up to VIN#010355 is still available:
A000 471 2030.

See attached.
(Was 108 German marks plus VAT a few years ago = 54 €uros :o :o :o)
