Title: Injector lines paint or restore
Post by: marios on April 01, 2012, 03:18:24
I was finally able to remove the engine from the bay so that I can perform a major clean up as well as belt, hose replacement etc.
Today I was able to get the injection out and while I cleaned most of the exterior, the injector lines are rusted. I used some 000 steelwool to remove the rust but that is not enough. Besides, I have seen some great looking SL's where the injector lines are gold.
So my question is: Is the gold a powder coat? Can these parts be powder coated? If not, what product do you use to get this gold finish?

That is it for now. Thanks in advance.

Mario,
definitely not painted or powder coated! Originally the injector lines were yellow Cadmium plated. Not easy to find a CAD plater here in California, but ask Franz in Escondido for his source of "yellow plating".

Thanks 66andBlue.
Is there a more common material to be used. I am not really after the exact look. I just want the engine to look clean and good.
Appreciate the info!

I use a blast cabinet to clean all of the lines. After I have this done I use a 1/4 inch air angle grinder with a small wire wheel. Polish all of the lines until they are shiny again. Plating mirrors whatever is underneath so if you have pits, scratches, or a dull surface, the plated surface will look the same.

Eastwood has a 3 part process that you can paint on which looks similar to zinc chromate or yellow cad. Zinc chromate costs about half as much to have done as yellow cad. Painting won't last more than a couple of years before it starts to flake off.
