Title: Recommendations for Steering Box specialists in Australia
Post by: franjo_66 on March 11, 2012, 21:54:57
Looks like I will need to get my steering box rebuilt/overhauled. It's for my 1965 230SL and is a mechanical version (ie not hydraulic) and is the RHD unit (part no. is A1114604401 for this box). The OEM replacement is quoted at $2200 plus core !

Can any of the fellow enthusiasts from down under recommend repairers who are able to tackle this job and have used them for their own cars ?  Otherwise my only other recourse will be to ship the box overseas for someone like C&M hydraulics to overhaul.

Any details would be appreciated

Regards
Franjo

Frank,

Ring Joe at Classique Motors South Melbourne on (03) 9690 5444 and ask him.  I am not sure if he does it but he will hopefully give you another reference for it if he doesn't do it himself.

I believe the manual steering box is common to the W108 so there should be a few good used ones out there.

Good point Dave, didn't register that fact until I saw your post.

Always good to have more than one option !

Thanks & Regards
