Title: Serial number positions for gearbox and diff
Post by: rutger kohler on March 05, 2012, 03:44:53
Hi, I would like to note the serial  number for the gearbox and diff on my 280SL. Could someone plse direct me to a photo of both positions so I can check them.

I've had a lot of members look at this but no replies, perhaps I have not been clear enough so here is another attempt!  As I understand it each gearbox and differential housing has a unique serial number, just like the engine. I have a small owners parts book which shows the approximate position of the serial number' on the gearbox bell housing, and the diff housing' but when I look on my car, I can't see them.  I am hoping someone else has taken a phot uder their car, of their serial numbers so that I can see where they are.  Hope this clears my request up.

Rutger,

I am not sure but think that the number is stamped on the dif near where the ratio number is also stamped on the left bottom rib.

This should help.  The lower number is the gear ration, and the upper number is the SN.  This is an early 230, and I can't say whether the numbers have moved in later models.

As for the transmission, on an automatic there is a tag on the lower left side of the gear case, just above the oil pan.  I'm not sure about 4 speeds.

Hi, Rutger,

Garry is right, on the 280 SL the serial # precedes the diff ratio on the lowest left rib of the casing.

On the 230s, its on the back housing as indicated by twistedtree.

I don't know where the serial # is stamped on a manual box but I believe there is a plate riveted on the rectangular block in the picture on the auto.
