Can't say I remember a tag on the air cleaner? I would be interested if anyone else has seen one on the canister.

I would be curious to understand what tag you mean. My 280 SL (fairly original) has no tag on the air cleaner.

My 280SL came with labels plastered on the air cleaner duct but I believe they were as non-original as the sound dampening mat on the hood.  :o
I have never seen an authentic original tag on the air cleaner housing.

OK think i have got it sorted.  Not meant for the air cleaner for the engine, I think it must be for the pad filter that fits in the air intake for the cabin (in front of the windscreen).  How hard is it to take this out to inspect and clean plse?

I think the "Performance" sticker is a advertising sticker that came with the packageing of a after market airfilter for intake, and whoever put the filter in, put the sticker in the intake housing.  Also the "Stop" sticker also on the housing, is a EPA requirement sticker that was also in the filter packageing.  It is because there might be some oil residue on the filter when replacing, so EPA does not want you to trash in land fills.  I would remove both.
