Title: 280 sl wont start
Post by: Conkam on December 27, 2011, 23:06:32
Hi

I just bought my first 280 SL from 71. The car has not been on the street since 1995. I bought the car without seeing it start, but I had my mechanic friend with me, who thought the engine sounded healthy. I need to start the car, where should I start to debug. All advice are welcome.

 Thanks in advance.

Mr Conkam,  I'm in the same boat.  Lots of help on the site.  Do some digging you should find some good advice.

I just got a 1969 280sl that been sitting since 1991 and have not tried the engine yet.

I haven't done much yet - I just keep finding more and more rust and have been chasing that: (I haven't had much time to play yet and am in no rush)
I had the tank cleaned and un clogged the vent lines
I took apart the fuel pump and got it running
I am trying to take the rad off but am having problems with the oil feed nut on the bottom (thats where I'm at)  When I drained the rad the antifreeze looked pretty good with only one clump of jelly substance.  I assume there is more.

I'm refusing to purchase a battery until I have done everything that I can to be prepared before I start it.  Like I said no rush.

Check out Mr. Snowyte and his exploits.
