Title: side marker lights or reflectors

I am lost , why do some cars have side maker lights and some have just reflectors ? Thanks  for the help .

In mid 1969, Federal DOT regulations caused a change in US Specification cars, Pagodas included.  The cars side reflectors became illuminated markers powered by pigtails off of headlamps and tail lamps.
