Hello forum members,
I need to remove the wood trim at the base of the windshield. I own a 1971 280 SL with auto trans and A/C.
Any help will be most appreciated.

Hi Larry and everyone,
I will need to do this eventually, too. As it says below, mine is a '65 230. Will the removal/replacement procedure be any different?

The speaker cover is removed by two screws from above. They are small and one each end
I made a shortened screw driver to do this as you are up against the windscreen. The other
trim is the trickiest and for best access you should remove the glove box,radio, speedo and tacho.
You then need to remove the nuts from the back of the trim taking care not to drop them
behind the dash.

Liq; It can be very difficult to remove the left side wood section without damaging the raised setion of the dash coverover the instermemts. This is easely remedied by cutting some 2" wide strips of thin sheetmetal (about 20 ga ), and taping them onto the dash cover at the screw locations so that when the wood is removed the threaded shafts that are attached to the back of the wood won't scratch or crack the dash cover. Its a very tight fit. This system also works in reverse when you install the new wood.

The best way is to remove the stud by using two metal nuts but do be careful as you can damage the threads in the wood. If it's very tight just leave it in place and do as Garry suggests but if it comes out easily removing the wood is a breeze.
